Project Background

Introducing to you RUN WITH PURPOSE.

No matter how much we love running - we all lack motivation at times.
After conducting primary research I found out that some additional motivation is often found in running for a greater good, running together and receiving extra encouragement in a form of awards. That's how Run with Purpose was born.

Supported by charity organisations who partner directly with Nike this new gamification feature allows you to participate in events raising awareness and collecting funds for a certain Purpose. You may choose your own, just click join and run - your miles are tallied with the common goal.

Personas

Agatha and Andrew represent our primary users. Their needs, goals, motivations, and frustrations were all taken from patterns discovered during the user interviews. Understanding who they are and how they think allows us to design a solution that they would actually use.

To design a solution that can specifically help Agatha and Alex, I reframed their needs into "How Might We?" questions. These questions allow us to empathize with both personas and define what we're trying to solve.

How might we:

Creating a product that accounts for both user and business goals

To determine which features and solutions to implement, I listed out the common business and user goals to ensure our product would satisfy the goals of all stakeholders.

Information Architecture

After conducting Brand research of Nike Run Club app and documenting all my Research Findings from Research phase, I started designing a seamless and flexible user experience.

Using the task flows as foundations, I created user flows that accounted for the different decisions a user would make as they navigated through the new feature to ensure a more seamless and flexible user experience.

Sketches and low-fidelity wireframes

Using my UI Requirements and flows as a guide, I began sketching and them digitalized the low-fidelity wireframes

Prototype

I created a prototype to test with users and identify pain-points within the experience.

Please press ‘Options’ (in the top right corner) - ‘Scale down to fit’ for better interaction with the prototype

User testing

I then conducted remote evaluative testings with 11 participants using Maze to identify pain-points and opportunities for improvement in the experience.

Based on my findings I created an affinity map, made priority revisions and iterated on the designs.

Reflection

This was a project where I worked within the bounds of an existing product and it offered a unique set of challenges

  • Adding a new feature that had no precedent in the existing app and working within the bounds of the existing design system was challenging. It was particularly interesting to find inconsistencies in Nike’s design and analyze the reasonings behind those decisions.

  • One of the most difficult part was not to come up with ideas to design, but to choose which ones to prioritize and implement, as well as what to iterate on after receiving a lot of insights and user feedback. Keeping it simple was the hardest.

  • This project made me reproach my thoughts about existing applications and what problems have yet to be solved. It also made me experience how much research there is behind each implemented feature and how critically important it is to understand your user’s needs before introducing something new.
